The Dayiratou Ansaroudeen of
Louisville was first introduced around the year 2000 when we started to notice a
considerable population of Muslim Africans coming into Louisville, Kentucky. The
main purpose of the Dayira was to follow the principles of Sheikh Ebrahim Nyass
in promoting Islam, unity and helping each other wherever we are. In trying to
follow the spirit of sheikh Ebrahim Nyass we also thought that it was our duty
to contribute to all religious activities that happen back home and in the
United States. After a meeting was held, more people were notified of the goals
of the Dayira and we decided to make a contribution of 10 dollars per month in
order to put our goals into practice. In the following years we were able to
achieve some of the goals. Among our achievements were as follows:
• We were able to contribute monetarily to the annual Gamo of Sheikh Ebrahim
Nyass in Medina Kaolack and also the annual Gamo of late Sheikh Hadi Nyass in
Washington DC.
• We were able to financially help few people among us here in Louisville that
had some immigration problems and needed some money to settle their problems.
• We were also able to financially help two elderly relatives that came from
Gambia to USA to seek medical attention.
• We also contributed when a relative died in California and the body had to be
taken to Gambia for burial.
Despite all those achievements we felt that the Dayira was not strong enough,
and we wanted to do more because we knew that we could do more. By the year 2005
we had more and more people coming to live in Louisville, and it was felt that
we could reorganize the Dayira to be stronger because we had more forces. In the
year 2006 we held a general meeting of “Talubehs” (followers) and many more new
people attended. We decided to reorganize the Dayira under the leadership of Bye
Faye, who was voted president. We also created some other posts like vice
president, secretary, treasurer, and an organizing committee. We also involved
the women under the leadership of Yama Cham who was voted president for the
women. We established a monthly contribution of 10 dollars for men and 5 dollars
for women.
In august of 2006 under the leadership of Bye Faye, we decided to invite Sheikh
Baba Lamin Nyass to visit the Dayira in Louisville after the annual Gamo of
Washington DC for which we sent a delegation and also contributed financially.
This marked our first conference with Baba Lamin Nyass and it was held at the
mosque in Six mile lane, Louisville, KY. Baba Lamin was very impressed by our
attendance and performance that he promised us another visit next year if we
wanted that. So, in the following year, Sept 2007, we invited him again for our
second conference. It was held this time at the Holiday Inn at South
Hourstbourne Road because of the bigger size of the Dayira. Due to more members
we have been able to contribute more money, and the same year we also hosted
Imam Hassan Ceesay to come and visit the Dayira. We hosted Imam Hassan at the
Marriot Hotel and he made a very good speech and encouraged the “Talubehs”
(followers). Since then we have hosted several guests of the Dayira including
Alhagie Mohamed Sainabou Nyass, Alhagie Makiyou Nyass, Sayida Safiyah Nyass,
Serigne Basirou Nyass, and Sayida Jainaba Nyass. Since then we have also
increased our financial contributions for the annual “Gamo” at Medina Kaolack
and annual “Siyareh” for the year 2007 and 2008. Among our other advancements
also is that we have been able to establish a weekly gathering of the “Talubehs”
where we do “Wasifa” and “Wird”. Among the people who attend this weekly Wasifa
and Wird are Gambians, Senegalese and American “Talubehs”.
In an effort to still develop the Dayira it was unanimously accepted in our
general meeting that we should step up our contributions starting from September
2007. All men are contributing a monthly amount of 20 dollars and women
contribute a monthly amount of 10 dollars now. We have also decided to change
the annual conference to an annual “Gamo” with Baba Lamin Nyass next year 2009
In an effort to also bring together all the Dayiras in different United States
cities, the president Bye Faye has suggested that all the Dayiras should rally
behind the Baytu Barham Foundation which is the main organization of Sheikh
Ebrahim Nyass in the United States. He suggested that all contributions intended
for Sheikh Ebrahim Nyass should now be sent to Baytu Barham and the Foundation
will forward it to the Khalifa General on behalf of all the followers in United
States. From then on, the Khalifa will distribute the money for whatever
purposes necessary.
